Republic of Aurorheim

Aurorheim, officially the Republic of Aurorheim, is a dominant-party parliamentary representative democracy in western Dissoploforia. It possesses a long coastline that stretches the Marlievon Ocean to the west; it borders Romerno (FKS) to the north, Praefectus to the north-west, Ovstylap to the east, and Fengese Huazheng to the south. It is comprised of FOUR provinces; these include the Nordenheim District, Vesturheim District, the Free State of Aurora, and the Republic of Slavonia. With a population of 119,411,207, Aurorheim is the 22nd-most populous country in the world, ahead of Corlenia and Northern Czech but behind Kkhano and Frontera. Stortfjall is the capital of the nation and the largest city which houses the parliament, the judiciary, and the Central Court.

About 52% of the population are White Aurorans. The remaining population consists of Slavic people to the east (20%), Praefectans to the north-west (18%), Scarastians to the north (8%), Fengese to the south (1%), and a small number of people from other backgrounds. This makes Aurorheim a relatively diverse nation encompassing many religions, languages, cultures, and traditions. However, despite all this, English and Trodis are the only legally recognized languages in the whole country, and classes for them are mandatory for all people. However, it should be noted that classes for local languages are taught but are deemed optional.

Aurorheim possesses a GDP of 7,526 trillion Auroran Ingal (6,272 trillion USD) with its main exports being minerals and weapons. It is considered a developed country ranking pretty high on human development indexes. Currently, as it stands, Aurorheim has been a member of the Northern Cooperation and Security Organization for a number of years now. Outside observers have debated whether or not Aurorheim qualifies as a middle or a great power as it holds considerable influence in regional affairs but has a notable effect on global affairs as well.

Etymology

Aurorheim is a combination of the words Aurora and Heim, Aurora is the name of the area the nation rests on and Heim is the word for "home" in the Trodis language. Thus, Aurorheim means "Aurora Home" (Literal translation) or "Home of the Aurorans". However, Aurorheim is sometimes referred to by its old name Aurora by individuals and organizations.

In Aurorheim, the people are usually referred to as Aurorans, a generalized demonym.

History

Establishment and Civil War (1925–1930)

Born from the embers of the Third Coalition War, the predecessor to modern Aurorheim, the Federation of Aurora had been formed in the eastern reaches of the ancient Praefectan nation. Created under an Anterian mandate, the Federation of Aurora was created as a nation of equals for the many ethnic groups in the area where they could exercise the same rights as everyone else. However, even at its earliest points, it was clear that Aurora was effectively a puppet of Anteria as the government would be dominated by former army officers and generals of the Anterian Army that fought in the war. A military junta with an iron fist reigns, the newly created nation would be immediately sprung into conflict, the Auroran Civil War. Separatist and secessionist forces of varying degrees sprung up in the first few months of the Federation as they vowed independence from the oppressive junta.

The first shots of the Civil War were fired in Slavonia (The Slavic majority area of Aurora) as Slavic separatist forces sought to separate their region from Aurora and their oppressive rule. The West Ovstylapian Regionalist Organization as it was called was established on September 16th, 1925 as it numbered around 15,000-20,000 fighters. The WORO's first actions were seizing several major cities and settlements in the area as the outnumbered separatists resorted to a guerilla warfare campaign against the numerically superior Federal Defense Force of Aurora. Both forces were mostly armed with surplus weapons left over from the Third Coalition War with more modern arms and material aid given to Aurora by Anteria.

The WORO's guerilla campaign proved extremely successful as the FDF couldn't dislodge the separatist forces from the heavily wooded areas. This led to a stalemate as the FDF was unable to advance into the separatist-held regions whilst the WORO lacked the numbers to mount a meaningful offensive, thus leading to a deadlock. But, in a strategic blunder like no other, a massive gap had been created in the frontline, leading to WORO guerillas bypassing the FDF forces and making their way toward Soktern, a crucial supply hub. The guerillas would raid the city which was barely defended as they took supplies and weapons to continue their operations before torching the warehouses storing the supplies and damaging other important infrastructure. This came to be known as the Soktern Blunder. With all this said, the WORO had a major split between two factions with the Unionists seeking union with Ovstylap whilst the Regionalists seeking independence as a state within itself. One thing or another would eventually lead to these two factions warring with each other which was a stroke of luck for the FDF as they were able to exploit the thinned-out as they struck a deadly blow that saw a large portion of both sides and manpower lost. From then on, the WORO remnants would be on the back end of any FDF offensives. Controversially, during their war with the WORO, the native Slavs were open to supporting the WORO's cause against Aurora as they would shelter them, provide information, and give them supplies. All of this would culminate in the Slavonian Removal Campaign as FDF forces would begin forcibly deporting or otherwise killing the native population of the area. Millions would either die or flee east into newly independent Ovstylap which was in no position to aid the war in the west. With their main support directly under attack and the organization itself warring between two factions, by 1929, the WORO was a mere husk of what it once was as at the end of 1930, the last insurgent stronghold would be subdued, drawing the WORO's existence to a close.

The Soktern Blunder was a humiliating defeat as an essential supply hub had been raided, an enemy force was behind the frontlines, and it heavily demoralized FDF forces. This caused a domino effect as not too long after, a second separatist force in the north-west formed which was called the Lord's Holy Templars. The LHT was a hardline Christian organization that sought to reintegrate Aurora into the Praefectan fold as it came into existence with partial support from the orthodox church to the West. The LHT is notable because its members were obligated to wear templar armor. Some were even armed with swords and other melee weapons but most were armed with guns. The Templars made heavy use of horses as instead of fighting a war attrition, the knights preferred being a highly mobile force. They have a track record of heavily utilizing hit-and-run tactics as they would conduct short surprise attacks on FDF forces only to withdraw before they could respond in force. Compared to the large and slower forces of the FDF, the Templars had tremendous success in dealing with their foes on the battlefield. Despite this, the Templars were exceedingly unpopular due to the reputation the Praefectan Orthodox Church had gained over the years. Due to past experiences and history, the Templars found it extremely hard to find allies besides the ones in Praefectus. Because of all this, unlike the WORO, the Templars lacked the support and the assistance the locals could have provided as this would affect their cause majorly until their last defeat at the Battle of Victoriam with the infamous Sir Orelia's Charge where the last of the knights made a final mad dash against the FDF forces where they were gunned down mercilessly.

The last major combatant of this war was the Auroran Revolutionary Front which was a loose coalition of socialists, communists, anarchists, and other leftist elements. Their main territory was in the northernmost area of the country where they were able to gain a positive relationship with the locals as they promised better lives and rights to them in exchange for supporting the revolutionary cause. Following the footsteps of Vladimir Ulyanovis in Novoroyska and Dimitry Kier in Astana-Anders, the ARF sought to establish a worker’s revolution in Aurora. However, the ARF was riddled with internal conflict and scuffling as elements of the coalition often disagreed and sometimes opposed each other's actions due to differing goals, motives, and most importantly, ideology. Compared to the Lord's Holy Templars and the WORO, the ARF is generally seen as the lesser of three as they were defeated by the FDF with a combination of wars between its many factions which worked in Auroran favor as the leftists were rounded up, and defeated by 1923.

Occupational Era (1925–1950)

On October 23rd, 1930, the last opposition holdout was defeated as the war ended. The Federal Defense Force which had covert support from Anteria had killed or deported 5 million residents as many more had fled the country to avoid war and persecution with a further 3 million fleeing after the war's end. However, on November 17th, 1930, Anterian military forces began landing on the northernmost coast of the country as Anteria announced an invasion to topple the Auroran regime and restore order in the area. However, besides some small incidents, no Auroran forces had any major fights with Anterian forces as they did not attempt to stop them in any sort of capacity.

Due to the war, the nation had been left heavily depopulated which meant less workforce and thus, less work being done which would be catastrophic to the economy. To remedy the issue, Anteria had begun immigrating people to the occupied nation with monetary and land promises. This however proved pretty unpopular with the natives as they began instigating race riots against the newly arrived foreigners. These incidents were limited to cities where the native population was the majority. The Federal Republic, seeing the ensuing violence would declare martial law as Anterian military forces responded to the unrest with extreme prejudice as many thousands would be arrested, tried, and sent off to prisons where the conditions were lackluster.

Over time, the race riots died down as cases of racially motivated attacks on the Anterian immigrants became rarer and rarer. Beginning in the mid-1930s and 40s, the economy began showing signs of growth so did the Anterian immigrant population which is more commonly referred to as White Aurorans. According to a census, in 1938, the White Auroran population constituted 16% of the population but a decade later in 1948, they constituted 35% of the population with no sign of stoppage in growth.

In the late 1940s, a slight movement calling for a genuinely independent Aurora began gaining attraction. Initially comprised of the Auroran native population, the movement was eventually eclipsed by a large influx of White Aurorans who also began calling for independence. Initially starting with simple posters and leaflets, it was eventually transformed into large peaceful demonstrations across the nations as people held up banners reading "Occupation is not independence". As time went on, the movement only increased in numbers as sooner or later, the majority of the country would start calling for freedom.

De-Occupation (1950-1955)

Beginning on February 5th, 1950, a gradual withdrawal of Anterian army forces began as the occupational troops were slowly but surely replaced by a local military force. In conjunction with this, a new constitution would begin to be drafted as the current one made Aurorheim into a de-facto colonial territory of Aurorheim. In 1951, The Auroran Federal Defence Force would be established as an interim military force that would take over the duties of the gradually withdrawing Anterian forces as little by little, self-determination would be within the reach of Aurora.

Despite all this, the Anterian occupation would have a long-lasting effect on the area as a majority of the nation was made up of white Aurorans of foreign descent. Anterian investment and development of the country turned what was a rural, barely developed countryside into an industrialized economy taking advantage of the large deposits of coal, iron, and other natural resources. During this, a new constitution for Aurorheim would start being written as the Anterian military began negotiating with the various ethnic groups in the nation to ensure long-lasting peace between them and a fully functioning government to govern over them. The framework of Aurorheim was laid down in the first drafts of the Commonwealth Proclamation in 1953 with deliberation from representatives of various ethnic groups.

On June 6th, 1955, the last Anterian soldier left Aurorheim as the Commonwealth of Aurorheim would be declared a day later with the Commonwealth Proclamation coming into effect soon after as a new nation was born that day.

New Nation, New Conflict (1955-1959)

On July 5th, 1955, the first elections in Aurorheim took place with a multitude of parties present, these were: The Social Justice Party (Center-left, Social Democracy), The Communist Party of Aurorheim (Far-Left, Marxist-Leninism), The Democratic Union(Center-right, Conservative), and Th National Union Party (Right-wing, National Conservative). Partially due to a major boost from White Auroran votes and effective campaigning, the National Union Party won the majority with 52% of the votes in the 1955 election.

Geography

Elevation of map of Aurorheim

Aurorheim is a mountainous and heavily forested country in Western Dissolploforia with a coastline stretching from the Nordic Ocean in the north to the Marlievon Ocean to the south. The nation is marked by vast forested regions and highly elevated areas with coastal plains in the northwest corner and the southern parts as well. In the central-eastern portion of the nation, a large mountain is present with an average elevation of 2000-3000 meters with the peak reaching a height of 5,419 meters above sea level.

Except for the areas reaching 4000-5000 meters, the mountain is covered on all sides in a montane forest called the Fjallskogur (Elevated Forest). From the north of that exists a deciduous forest spanning North to northwest Aurora called the Sibreytilegur (Ever Changing). South from there exists an evergreen forest in the southern part of the country comprising a vast landscape of evergreen trees called the Obreytanleg (Unchanging). After that is one of the most defining parts of the geography which is Mount Hrikalegur which has a peak measuring 5,419 meters above sea level. Finally, there exist two plains regions in the coastal areas the Nordic Coastal Plains on the northwestern coast and the Marlievon Coastal Plains on the southern coast.

Climate

With its proximity to the equator, the northern parts of Aurorheim tend to be hotter than the southern parts as it averages between 20-32 Celsius. Due to this, the northern parts of the nation rarely get snow compared to the south except for snowfall in areas exceeding 3000 meters above sea level.

Demographics

Language
In Aurorheim, there are five major languages present in the nation with Troðís being the largest as it is a mandatory subject within schools. Troðís arrived in Aurorheim beginning in the late 1920s and early 1930s as settlers from Anteria arrived in numbers to the nation which at the time was a quasi-colony of the Confederation. With occupied Aurorheim being controlled by a White Auroran, Troðis became a mandatory subject alongside English in 1932 as it began to be taught to not only the White Aurorans but also the other ethnic groups present in the area. Following the White Auroran population boom and the deportations of the 1960s and the 1970s by the Gunnarist government, the other languages present in Aurorheim began to decline over time. As the other languages, Ovstylapian, Scarastian, and Latin weren't taught at all in schools, it created a generation of individuals who couldn't speak their native language and only knew Troðís. However, after the fall of the Gunnarist government following the Good Faith Agreement, the new transitional government worked to reintroduce the languages of minority ethnic groups into schools.

Religion

Aurorheim is a relatively Christian-dominated with also a relatively high atheistic/agnostic nation with 48% of the nation believing in Protestantism, 22% Orthodox, and 30% Atheism/Agnostic making up the religious demographic of the nation. The Protestant believers of Aurorheim, especially the older generations practice the deep-rooted conservative values with their origins from Anteria. However, the newer generation of White Aurorans has developed less conservative and more liberal values over time with the shifting of time following the Gunnarist eras.

The religious demographic of Aurorheim has changed heavily over the years as during the first few decades of the nation's existence Orthodox Christianity was the predominant religion in the area. The Praefectan Orthodox Church possessed considerable influence over the land, especially over the local Slavic population which was the predominant ethnic group at the time. However, after the Third Coalition War, the Federation of Aurora, created under an Anterian Mandate began a campaign of genocide as they had begun persecuting Orthodoxy heavily whilst deporting the local Slavs en masse. Churches were burned down, sacred sites desecrated, and believers in the faith repressed heavily to the point that many began migrating west into Praefectus to seek refuge which already worsened the hostile relationship between the two states. After 1925, when Aurora was put under an Anterian military occupation, the religious and ethnic repression in the area was curbed heavily as any incidents similar to it were punished accordingly during that time. In conjunction with this, the large influx of settlers and immigrants from Anteria, most of whom were Troðís, carried over their Protestant belief to the area which created a tense situation between Orthodox and Protestant believers. This coincided with the racially motivated riots of the 1930s where native Aurorans created a state of civil unrest against what they perceived as Anterian Imperialism in the area. Violence between the Protestants and Orthodox believers saw a sharp increase as people would vandalize each other's churches, harass them, throw rocks through the windows, and even commit arson in certain cases. However, these gradually died down as the riots either lost steam or were brutally cracked down upon by Auroran and Anterian authorities. But, with the Gunnarist periods, prejudice against the Orthodox church increased dramatically, coinciding with the large deportations of ethnic Slavs in the eastern district of Slavonia

Government

Infrastructure of Aurorheim

Aurorheim's government operates as a Federal dominant-party parliamentary republic with the Auroran National Action holding the majority within the Republican Assembly, holding 390 seats (65%) of the 600 with the DCA (Democratic Community of Aurora) coming in at second with 123 seats (22%), and the Auroran Defense League coming in third with 48 seats (8%) with the remaining 30 seats (5%) of the seats going to others. The ANA has held a majority within the parliament since the republic was founded in 1991 with a vast majority of the White Aurorans voting for them whilst maintaining a coalition with the Democratic Community of Aurora. Auroran elections follow a plurality voting system, also known as first-past-the-post or winner-takes-all voting where individuals vote for a specific candidate within their district for a seat in the parliament. The Republican Chamber represents the Provinces of Aurorheim with each province being allotted a fixed number of seats, regardless of the population. The Republican Chamber has 40 seats with the provinces being split up into 10 districts to reflect the 10 seats and whatever candidate manages to win a majority in the specific district of the province gets put into the seat of the Republic Chamber for their specific province. In the Republican Assembly, the nation is split up into 600 electoral constituencies representing the 600 seats in the assembly and people from those 600 constituencies vote for a specific candidate for a seat that would represent their constituency. Due to the nature in which the election in Aurorheim works with regard to plurality voting, the ANA has managed to consistently maintain a majority in all chambers of the parliament which has been a hot topic

The subnational entities of Aurorheim operated under a concurrent jurisdiction system where a province may create its laws and legislate itself under the condition that it conforms to laws and frameworks established by the government. Thus, if the central government signs a law that allows or prohibits such things, a state may not create laws and such that contradict or otherwise go against it in general. It's stated in the constitution that the government can strike down a law or legislation made by a province, regardless of any laws made by the government itself with the expressed approval of the Republican Chambers with no less than three-fourths of the Republican Chamber members agreeing to it.

Despite the parliamentary system of Aurorheim, the President of Aurorheim holds executive power. The constitution, adopted in 1991, states that the President of the republic is the highest office within the nation with him or her acting as both head of state and head of government. As head of state and head of government, the President has the authority to appoint officials to positions in government such as judges, ambassadors, heads of key agencies, and ministers of ministries. The President also represents that nation on the international stage as he or she is tasked with fostering better relations with other nations by hosting foreign dignitaries and making state visits. The President serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces which gives them authority over the armed forces of the republic. However, the constitution states that the President may not tamper with the parliament by attempting to change candidates in either the Republican Chamber or Republican Assembly or attempting to change laws to bolster his or her power over the legislature. If done so, the parliament must hold an emergency vote on the conduct of the president and vote to either suspend their powers or remove them from office. The armed forces are thus responsible for assisting the parliament if such an event occurs to prevent any significant damage to the nation.

Foreign Relations and Military

Since 1991, Aurorheim has worked to fix its relationships after the nation became a pariah state during the National Union era. This included bolstering relations with Anteria and other members of the Entente such as Altikar, Afzhizstan, Monhaine, etc. It also saw rapprochement with nations that they were generally hostile to such as Ovstylap, Astana-Anders, and Novoroyska. Aurorheim is a member of the Anterian Commonwealth and has maintained generally a friendly nation with former Anterian nations as they regularly collaborate with Anteria and the former colonies with economic, political, and military affairs.

The Aurorheim Republican Armed Forces, commonly shortened to ARAF is comprised of three main branches, Aurorheim Republican Army, Aurorheim Republican Air Force, and the Aurorheim Republican Navy. The Auroran military is a decently sized force with approximately 200,000 active duty personnel in the army with a further 500,000 reserve personnel as well. The armed forces is issued with equipment and vehicles either made domestically, bought from Anteria, or licensed produced from Anterian companies as the ARAF fields various new and advanced weapons on all three theaters of warfare, ground, air, and sea. Aurorheim is a nuclear-armed nation with it having tested its first nuclear weapon in the Great Southern in collaboration with Anteria on March 5th, 1972 nicknamed Mjolnir. Aurorheim's nuclear arsenal consists of six Orka-Class Submarines that can launch SGM-2 Fluga SLCM capable of carrying a 200-kiloton warhead from 650mm secondary torpedo tubes, created as a cost-effective way to arm Aurorheim's fleet of diesel attack submarines with second-strike capabilities. The Aurora-Class SSBN, first commissioned in 1997 is Aurorheim's prime nuclear launch platform on the seas with it being armed with sixteen SGM-10 Spjot SLBMs, capable of carrying six 300kt SBW-15 warheads or ten 150kt SBW-95 warheads. The air component of Aurorheim's nuclear arsenal consists of AGM-9 Blar Haukur air-launched cruise missile capable of carrying 300kt ABW-10 warhead and the older AGM-86 Haukur air-launched cruise missile carrying the ABW-91 warhead. These missiles are maintained and operated by the Aurorheim Republican Air Force and the Aurorheim Republican Navy with both of them utilizing the RAF-01 Blar Haukur, capable of carrying the AGM-9 while, and the RAF-84, capable of carrying the AGM-86 Haukur. Currently, Aurorheim does not possess ground-launched ballistic missiles nor did it ever in the past, only utilizing air and sea delivery systems. Lastly, Aurorheim doesn't maintain a first-use policy as their doctrine states that "nuclear weapons will be used when the use of it is required for the Republic in extraordinary times". The ambiguity of it has been speculated to be a policy stating that Aurorheim claims the use of its nuclear weapons whenever and however it wishes.

Economy

Aurorheim is a free-market capitalist state with the national currency being the Auroran Ingal. Aurorheim possesses a large shipping industry, owing to its proximity to the Gallipoli Strait with the biggest ports being situated in the north and south. One of its biggest exports is firearms with it producing and selling both licensed-produced foreign weapons and domestically designed weapons to civilian and military markets with sizable portions going to Anteria and other Commonwealth nations, Aurorheim stands as one of the biggest manufacturers of small arms weapons. Mining is also a large industry with Aurorheim having large reserves of coal, iron, oil, and copper. Aurorheim also possesses a fairly large timber industry with the nation producing 87 million cubic meters of timber annually.

Culture

Aurorheim is a mix of various cultures and traditions as it mixes those from Troðís, Slavic, Scarastian, and Praefectan. The White Aurorans carried much of the cultures and traditions of Troðheim from Anterian when the first settlers arrived in Aurora. White Aurorans enjoy smaller home plans and furniture styles with them spending a large portion of their time outside in group events and activities and such. The Eastern Slavic groups practice culture and tradition much the same as their brethren in Ovstylap with Christian Orthodoxy playing a major role as men and women follow a more traditional role while grandparents play a bigger role in raising children than other cultures and people. In the West, the culture is influenced by Praefectus with centuries-old churches, orthodox imagery, and the large presence of libraries with textbooks, poetry pieces, and encyclopedias from times long past, the mix of old and modern buildings is quite the scene to behold. In the south, Drangavik has a small community of Fengese immigrants with a portion of the city being referred to as Little Taijing with wooden structures and such being a notable part of the area with the Auroran-Fengese being seen wearing large and extravagant robes just like their counterparts in Huazheng and mainland Feng.

Infrastructure

Aurorheim possesses one of the largest networks of highways connecting most of the major cities while freeways tend to connect the smaller cities and rural areas to the major cities. The Ministry of Transportation Safety is responsible for handling and maintaining the highways and freeways as a survey taken by the ministry estimates that every 1 in 5 households possess an automobile of some kind, sometimes more than one. Railways in the nation run along the highways and freeways, helping to deliver resources, goods, and people between cities on time. The Railway Department of the Ministry of Transportation Safety is responsible for maintaining the railways while Aurora Rail Company is responsible for operating the freight services and SFP Transportation operates commuter services.

Aurorheim has seven International in Stortfjall, Concordia, Mosfell, Primis City, Theoderna, Soktern, and Jorundarfell with 536 airports spread over its major cities throughout.

Energy

Aurorheim has a very large energy production sector with it being comprised of power stations, nuclear reactors, wind farms, and solar farms in the south. Power stations account for about half the energy production sector while nuclear accounts for a quarter with the remaining portions being filled by wind farms and solar farms which are very prevalent in the south of the country. Since the 2000s, the number of power stations present in the nation has been gradually decreasing as Aurorheim has sought cleaner alternatives for power production such as nuclear, wind, and solar. But, until a significant change is made, the power stations in Aurorheim account for about 17% of the 279,000,000 metric tons of coal produced by the nation being spent for power production while oil accounts for about 8% of the 1,080,411,277 barrels of oil

Aurorheim's main energy generator is the Ministry of Energy as it operates and maintains the power grid and power production facilities all over the country. All electric power companies in Aurorheim were nationalized in 1942 and have remained as such since.
